Lofoten is the majestic row of mountains that arise out of the North Norwegian coast in a south-west direction, north of the Polar Circle at 67- 68 degrees north. The group of islands consist of Røst, Værøy, Moskenesøy, Flakstad, Vestvågøy, Gimsøy og Austvågøy, and are in geological matters somewhat world famous. The islands were made 3 milliard years ago, and consisted of some of the oldest rock formations that we know at our planet. When the last ice age ended, 10000 year ago, these sharp and steep mountains were shaped as we know them today. The first people came to Lofoten 6000 years ago. Stone age people lived from fishing and hunting. They had a rich supply of deer, bear, reindeer, lynx and beaver, in addition to what the sea could offer; being seal, fish or whale. Agriculture started as far as we know very early. Grain was grown in Lofoten as early as 4000 years ago. |
