WHEN TO VISIT

“Everything you do here is dictated by the elements. You might have clear skies and see the Northern Lights. You might come under the hammer of the gods, get snowed in and have to cosy up in front of the fire. You have to be practical in the Lofoten Islands and think on your feet. It’s a different kind of luxury. Nature determines absolutely everything, nothing is superimposed. The invitation is to stand and see what’s in front of you.” – Valentine Warner

COD SEASON

March is the essence of Lofoten living. In the Arctic Circle it is a time of reawakening and prosperity with the return of the sunshine and life to the islands. During this season the Arctic cod migrate to the warm waters of Lofoten to spawn or, as we say, make love. We enjoy the stunning winter daylight, spectrum of natural colours and plenty of fresh snow, as well as relishing the chance of spotting the Aurora Borealis.

MIDNIGHT SUN

June welcomes in a myriad of deliciousness from our surrounding wild pantry. Sour, sharp sorrel carpets the lower mountains while those taking to the water may well expect to hook a lively trout or otherwise invigorate their senses with a bracing swim. Goats are producing rich milk for wonderful local cheeses and brunost while our team of chefs forage for wonderful cocktails. With the midnight sun high in the sky, it’s hard to resist staying up all night, perched among the mountain tops like a sea eagle and staring out over the glittering sea.

AUTUMN

In September we hope to start seeing the wispy shimmering Aurora Borealis above us. Below, the mosses are bubbling with mushrooms while the seas are bountiful with fish. Charcoal fires will be lit for lavish dinners while the kitchen will be preparing ferments, pickles and cures to tide the house through winter. With the autumn smells arriving to the nose, the trees turning in colour, the grouse and hares soon to turn white, September ushers in a most favourite season at Holmen.

FAQ

WEATHER
We highly recommend packing for every kind of weather. In northern Norway we can experience four seasons in one day. It is important to note that temperatures can vary greatly while hiking or out at sea. A full packing list is available after booking.

FOOD ALLERGIES
Upon booking, please inform our team about any food allergies. While we do our best to cater for dietary requirements (eg. dairy and gluten) we may not be able to cater for all requests. Please note that fish and meat form a large part of our menus, but we also have vegan and vegetarian options.

FAMILIES
We don’t recommend that Kitchen On The Edge Of The World is suitable for anyone under the age of 18. All other times, Holmen Lofoten warmly welcomes families. Our fishermen’s cabins and grounds provide ample space for young visitors to roam. Children under 2 years old are free of charge. If you would like to discuss a more child-friendly event at Holmen please do get in touch and we can arrange it.

ANIMALS
Holmen Lofoten is a natural nesting place for a number of birds and seabirds, and we therefore try keep dogs away, especially during the nesting season. To take care of guests with allergies, we also do not allow pets the rest of the year. Throughout the winter we are often being visited by otters. Sea eagles are also regular visitors to the area all year round.
