With the winter weather wild and brutal we’ve started the New Year with a tremendous storm in our village. Hurricane “Ingunn”, as named by the Norwegian Meteorological Service wildly carried us from January into February. We’ve been revitalized by the forces of nature that shape and guide our life here in Western Lofoten. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with the storms, January in the Arctic Circle is also a time of reawakening and prosperity and we’re excited to share our emerging culinary adventures, restaurant and offerings ahead. Whatever the season here, you will reconnect with nature and its rhythms. We look forward to welcoming you to our tiny, family run hotel and restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RESTAURANT RE-OPENING 10 FEBRUARY 2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As we welcome the return of the sun, the ovens are lit, the tables are set and our restaurant kitchen and bar come alive with the delicious tastes and gentle sounds of life. We look forward to offering another exciting year of seasonal food and drink menus and events created by our Holmen team and esteemed Kitchen On The Edge<\/a> guest chefs that richly express our unique place and culture here in the Lofoten Islands, Northern Norway. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

First day open is on Saturday 10 February. There will be a set 6-course menu<\/a> available Wed \u2013 Sun based on bookings which can be made via the details on our Booking<\/a> page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

S\u00c1MI NATIONAL DAY 6 FEBRUARY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 6th February is National S\u00e1mi Day. A day to celebrate the oldest culture in large areas near to us here in Northern Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. We had the honour to meet reindeer herder and educator M\u00e1ret R\u00e1vdn\u00e1 Buljo<\/a> at Mat og Prat last October. An event that was part of Arctic Innovation Week. Here M\u00e1ret gave participants a demonstration in the art of reindeer butchering. Offering her complex, holistic, indigenous knowledge that determines the meaning and use of every part of the reindeer. A cultural relationship that is deeply bonded and rooted in history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/em>KITCHEN ON THE EDGE 21 – 25 MARCH 2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We look forward to welcoming Professor of Religion and Environmental Ethics at the University of Florida Bron Taylor<\/a> who explores through the lenses of the sciences and humanities the complex relationship and influences among worldviews, values, ideologies and socioecological systems. Firedoor Chef Lennox Hastie<\/a> from Sydney, Australia is fascinated by fire working instinctively with this dynamic medium and a strong focus on fish and vegetables. And UK\u2019s foremost authority on leather\u2019s architectural and sculptural applications Bill Amberg<\/a> to our very first Kitchen On The Edge of 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

KITCHEN ON THE EDGE 2 – 6 MAY 2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For the first of our two events in May, friend, spoon carver and illustrator Lee John Phillips<\/a> returns to Holmen for a series of captivating wood carving workshops. Godfather of Spanish cooking in the UK Jos\u00e9 Pizzaro<\/a> joins us when our island springs alive under the Summer lights. Artist Jemma Lewis<\/a> offers mesmerizing paper marbling workshops that have an aqueous surface design which produce patterns similar to smooth marble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

KITCHEN ON THE EDGE 9 – 13 MAY 2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The second of our two events in May sees Artist Jemma Lewis<\/a> returning, offering the absorbing craft of paper marbling. Undertaken with traditional methods practiced for hundreds of years by floating water colour paints onto a viscous jelly-like surface made up of an Irish seaweed called Carrageenan. We are also honoured to welcome our first Norwegian Chef Heidi Bjerkan<\/a>. Heidi is the founder of Restaurant Credo in Trondheim and passionate about raising awareness of our food systems, improving land use practices and preserving traditional food cultures of the Tr\u00f8ndelag region. Friend, spoon carver and illustrator Lee John Phillips<\/a> also continues offering a series of captivating wood carving workshops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

KITCHEN ON THE EDGE 26 – 30 SEPTEMBER 2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For the first of our September Kitchen on the Edge events we are thrilled to welcome back Blacksmith Alex Pole<\/a> to our forge for captivating metal work sessions. Alex has a lifelong passion for metal work, using traditional and modern techniques; local or recycled materials wherever possible. We’re delighted to welcome Chef Jimmy \u00d8ien<\/a> from Restaurant Rest is our first guest chef for the September events. His ethos is based on using imperfect produce and items which would normally be discarded. Mark Lord<\/a>, aka Lino Lord is a professional photographer whose creative work capturing the natural world evolved into printmaking that embodies a natural distinctive style we’re excited to learn from and experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

KITCHEN ON THE EDGE 3 – 7 OCTOBER 2024<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our final Kitchen On The Edge Event welcomes highly acclaimed chef, restaurateur and food writer Henry Harris<\/a>. Inspired by the bouchons of Lyon and the bistros of Paris, Henry is co-owner of Bouchon Racine and Three Compasses in London. We can’t wait to see his take on our Arctic autumn produce. Lino Lord Mark Lord<\/a> continues instructing us in the art of printmaking, embracing timeless techniques to capture fascinating natural and iconic imagery. Along with Alex Pole<\/a>, sharing his lifelong passion for metal work that is both exhilarating and calming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
